De toute façon, c’est impossible ! En effet, cette fontaine a été installée en 1545, à proximité de l’ancien rempart de Cadenet. À cette époque, il n’y a pas d’autre fontaine dans le village ou à proximité, en dehors de sa soeur jumelle qui se trouvait en bas de la rue. Les habitants devaient jusqu’alors se contenter de citernes ou de puits, pouvant transmettre des maladies. Hélas, si la fontaine du bas de la rue dispose d’une source située assez loin du village, en direction de Villelaure, celle-ci, par contre, dispose d’une source qui vient du pied du château de Cadenet, et passe donc sous l’ancien cimetière du village qui se trouvait derrière l’église. Pendant un peu moins de quatre siècles, des épidémies, en particulier de typhoïde, se propagèrent à intervalles réguliers, avec pour épicentre cette fontaine. Finalement, les dernières victimes moururent en 1943. Après ce moment, la fontaine cessa de couler. Plus d’épidémie ! Hors de question de la remettre en eau !

The Cursed Fountain (Fountain on rue Kleber). Fancy a drink from the cursed fountain? Well, that’s no longer possible. In 1545 when the fountain was installed here next to the old village ramparts, there were no other fountains anywhere in the vicinity, excepting its twin fountain at the bottom of the same street. Back then, the villagers would rely on cisterns and wells for water which could, however, carry disease. Alas, while the fountain at the bottom of the street drew water from a spring which was a way out of the village towards Villelaure, the water in this fountain came from a spring near the castle and the old cemetery near the church. For almost four centuries, this cursed fountain was the epicenter of regular outbreaks of disease such as typhoid. The fi nal victims of its waters passed away in 1943, when the fountain fi nally dried up and there were no more problems. Who would ever want to drink here again ?
