le plus grand du canton, était alors un des fers de lance de l’instruction publique du sud-luberon. Cet édifi ce marqua la fin de l’épopée des écoles cadenétiennes dont on trouve les prémices vers 1660, les classes étant jusque-là louées à des particuliers. Un premier projet, encore plus grand, avait été lancé dans les années 1890, mais il était trop ambitieux et surtout trop cher. Bien entendu, à l’origine, le groupe scolaire n’était pas mixte, et c’est la raison pour laquelle il y avait en fait l’école Félicien David (pour les filles), et André Estienne (pour les garçons). Le mur de séparation était encore visible dans les années 1980, bien que la porte de communication ait été ouverte depuis longtemps. Le mur fut détruit pendant les années 1990, réunifiant l’école, qui fut alors baptisée, Mélina Mercouri, la Municipalité souhaitant mettre à l’honneur une femme ayant une envergure européenne.

Cadenet Primary School. Inaugurated in 1902 the Primary School in Cadenet, being the largest in the canton, was at the forefront of state education in the South Luberon. The current building marked the end of an epic series of Cadenet schools of which the premises date back to 1660, before which classrooms had been rented

from private owners. The fi rst plans were for a much bigger building in the 1890s

but were deemed too ambitious and too expensive. Of course originally the school was not mixed, and so the building housed The Félicien David School for Girls and The André Estienne School for Boys. Although the communicating door had been open for a longtime, the separating wall was still visible until the 1980s. This wall was demolished in the 1990s, uniting the two schools and by the same token the school was rechristened by the council The Mélina Mercouri School in honor of a European politician.
